DIY: Wall Art

Decorating is in full swing at the new Uptown apartment! This past weekend included a very fun trip to Michael’s for some craft supplies. I was worried for my wallet, but luckily they had a great sale going on and we were able to get a bunch of things for the apartment for about $50. Plus I had a $25 gift card left over from my birthday (thanks Mom!) so all in all, not that expensive!

While in the store, we discovered these super cute unpainted wooden frames for about $7 each. BTW, The unpainted wood area of Michael’s is just a plethora of DIY projects waiting to happen – so many more projects will be born there!

Ok so here are the frames we purchased plus two smaller ones…

What we did next is the easiest thing in the world. We painted!

Each frame got it’s own color, and just one coat of paint. It only took about an hour for them to dry completely.

…then Voila! Instant wall art!  We’re really digging the empty frame look too, it’s kind of quirky, but I guess that’s just the kind of girls we are!

DIY: Plastic Storage Drawers Makeover

This past weekend, I moved into my new apartment in Uptown, Minneapolis! Moving was quite hectic and very expensive. I found myself in dire need of a bedside table, but without the desire to actually spend money on it. I already had this set of cheap plastic drawers so I thought I would find a way to give them a little makeover to make them work as a cute side-table. The solution? Pretty paper!

The paper hides the clutter inside the drawers and it gives my new bedroom a pop of color and pattern. This didn’t take long at all and it was so much less expensive than buying something new!

Here’s how you can recreate the look!

1. Measure each drawer and cut a piece of colored paper to fit.

2. Use the clear tape – or any other type of adhesive you have on hand to secure the paper to the front of the drawer. I used a piece on each side and then two more to secure it to the bottom so it would sit flat against the front.

3. Repeat for each drawer and that’s it!

See? Super easy and very inexpensive! Now I have a side-table that matches my room/ style perfectly and I have a side table with a ton of storage!

23 Years

Happy Birthday to me! I’m 23 today, and I’m still confused about how that happened. 23 seems like an odd age to me (and not just in the sense that it’s an odd number). However, despite the fact that I haven’t really warmed up to the number, I am extremely hopeful about what this next year has to bring. I’m moving out into my own apartment this weekend, I have a job that I love, and I got the following birthday horoscope today:

Your expectations of yourself change as you realize that you’re capable of more. February marks a breakthrough involving your health and self-care. With new vibrancy, you attract friends and partners in March. April is your chance at a role you’ve long had your eye on.

So basically – I’m going to be healthier, and get a date – Sounds pretty great. Here’s to 23!

Project in Progress: Crochet Infinity Scarf

Last Friday, I made the insane decision to teach myself to crochet. 5 days, 2 balls of yarn, and countless YouTube videos later, this is what I have to show for it. It won’t be the most beautiful scarf in the world, but you have to start somewhere! I have every confidence that the next one will be much better, and in the meantime, I’m really enjoying how relaxing crocheting can be.

Wish me luck as I attempt to finish!

New Music Tuesday – A Weekly Roundup of Songs I’m Currently Enjoying

Tuesdays pretty much suck, but they are made slightly better due to the fact that iTunes releases new music and apps on Tuesdays. Small pleasures. Here are a few of the songs I just can’t get enough of this week! ( I know they aren’t all actually new songs, but the title is creative ok?!)

new music tuesday-1

1. Anything Could Happen (Remix) – Ellie Goulding
Loved the original and now digging the remixes.

2. Thrift Shop – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Is that your Grandma’s coat? A new anthem for Goodwill hunters everywhere.

3. Now – Paramore
Getting excited for the new album in April!

4. C’mon – Ke$ha
Ke$ha is my girl, and my drunk alter ego. Not to brag, but I can mimic her perfectly after a sipping on few warm wine-cooLERs.

5. Cups – Lulu & the Lampshades
Even though this song was made popular by the movie Pitch Perfect, I really prefer this version. In fact, I intend to learn it for my next family vacay to our cabin in Colorado where folksy songs are often performed on the porch.

6.Troublemaker – Olly Murs ft. Flo Rida
For some unexplainable reason, I thought this was a song by Bruno Mars the first time I heard it. Maybe it was the album cover? Oh well, I like it.

7. Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Clearly I’m just really digging Macklemore & Ryan Lewis these days, but this song just gets me pumped up. Like I can to go out and accomplish something big and important.

8.Better Dig Two – The Band Perry
Generally speaking, I don’t like country music unless it’s 70-80 degrees outside, but for some reason I really enjoy this song. Although, I have to wonder – what is it with this band and death songs?

9. Scream & Shout – Will. i.am & Britney Spears
Two words. Britney Bitch.

Hello World!

I’ve been meaning to start this blog for a while and I couldn’t imagine a more exciting time in my life to start! In just 11 days I’m taking a big step and moving out of my parents house (for real this time) and into an apartment in Uptown. Yep, I’m putting on my big girl pants and heading out to live on my own. The thought of freedom is very exciting, but it’s also kind of terrifying. I’d have to say that the thing that scares me the most is the fact that I completely lack the ability to cook anything besides cereal. That’s going to have to change pretty quickly as I refuse to eat cereal and microwave dinners for the rest of my days.

see you in 11 short days!

see you in 11 short days!

My roommate-to-be is my beautiful former college roomie, Becca, who will be leaving her home in New Jersey to brave the arctic MN winters. She’s noticed the recent temperature drop and she’s not happy about it, but don’t worry, I’ll make a true Minnesotan out of her yet!

In the meantime, we are getting super excited for our new home! It’s going to look like one big Pinterest project and I couldn’t be more excited.
